How many feather edge boards you need per metre depends on the width of the boards and the overlap needed. Usually, an overlap of 25mm is required, therefore choosing a board width of 150mm means you’ll need 8 feather edge boards per metre, resulting in a coverage of 125mm after overlapping.
To fit feather edge boards horizontally, all you need to do is fix the battens to the frame, leaving around 600mm of space between each one. You’ll want to start from the bottom, making sure each board is level before you begin to overlap each one by roughly 25mm. Then screw or nail each one at the top to allow movement. Continue upwards and always ensure alignment is achieved.
You should always nail feather edge boards on the thicker edge (overlapping edge), around 20mm from the top. Make sure they’re fully secured using stainless steel or galvanised nails but avoid nailing through both boards to allow movement.
